FMC’s staff training day emphasizes team-building and collaboration

The Ironton-Lawrence Community Action Organization’s Family Medical Centers (FMC), a federally-qualified healthcare center dedicated to serving the community, recently organized a staff training day with the theme “Under Construction: Team Building.” The event took place on Wednesday, June 28, at Ohio University Southern, bringing together FMC’s dedicated staff for a day of learning, teamwork, and professional development.

The training day kicked off with a warm breakfast and welcoming remarks from ILCAO Executive Director Dr. Gossett, who highlighted the strength of FMC as a united team with a shared vision. “A team is a group with a shared vision, and that is what FMC is. We have achieved so much thanks to the hard work of our team,” said Dr. Gossett.

Teamwork remained at the forefront as Board Chairperson Joy Corn expressed the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors which governs ILCAO and FMC. “This is a team effort, and a team effort for the whole agency. We are a team, and the community is why we are here,” emphasized Corn.

Throughout the day, staff members participated in a diverse range of training sessions aimed at enhancing collaboration and promoting excellence in service delivery. Kenzie Coakley, FMC’s Director of Human Resources, led a session highlighting the significance of collaboration, emphasizing the power of working together to achieve collective goals.

To strengthen behavioral health support, Pat Barron and Taylor Jones, experienced behavioral health professionals, provided verbal de-escalation training. This important training equipped staff members with essential skills to handle challenging situations with empathy and effectiveness.

FMC’s Chief Financial Officer Kelly Adkins delved into the organization’s financial goals, ensuring staff members understood the importance of fiscal responsibility as it related to the organization’s goals. The training day also included an engaging Inclusion and Diversity session led by Ohio University experts, Robert Pleasant and Dr. Teresa McKenzie, promoting an inclusive and equitable work environment.

A comprehensive presentation on security and IT support provided staff members with valuable insights into organizational protocols and technology resources, equipping them to navigate these aspects effectively. This training helped to ensure staff are equipped to safeguard sensitive patient information.

The training day also showcased Angela Pleasant, FMC’s Community Health Coordinator, who introduced FMC’s newest group, the Community Health team. This dedicated team, consisting of Angela and two Community Health Workers, focuses on providing face-to-face support and connecting community members with necessary services, thereby strengthening the well-being of the community.

During lunch, keynote speaker Jodi Collins, a respected board member and successful businesswoman, shared inspiring insights about teamwork and the mission of the organization. Collins’ words resonated with the staff, reminding them of the importance of their collective efforts in achieving FMC’s goals.

In addition to the group sessions, staff members attended individualized sessions tailored to their specific areas of expertise and interest. These sessions covered various topics, including customer happiness, emergency procedures, infection control, and more, ensuring staff members stay up to date with the latest knowledge and skills.

The training day concluded with a closing session led by FMC’s Director of Operations, Michael Kingery, who expressed gratitude to the staff for their commitment to personal growth and professional development. Throughout the day, staff members were also presented door prizes, adding excitement and appreciation to the event.

FMC extends sincere appreciation to Ohio University Southern for generously providing the facilities that facilitated this impactful training day. The collaboration between FMC and Ohio University Southern contributed to the success of the event, enabling staff members to benefit from a conducive learning environment.
